Happy Holidays!

This year I tried a different illustration approach and went with a stippling effect. If you’re unfamiliar with the technique, it consists of inking tiny dots that form shapes, giving an appearance of a shadow in the illustration. The closer the dots are to each other, the darker the shadow gets.

The other day my cat, Sly, thought it would be cool to help me design some logos and website layouts. I thought it would be cool too, until he left a nice pound of hair on my freshly cleaned desk.

Seventh.Ink Shirts Interviewed by T-Shirt Magazine

I was recently interviewed by T-Shirt Magazine, you can check it out on their site or begin reading below.

Seventh.Ink is the offspring of Seventhfury and is based out of Liverpool, New York. Seventh.Ink tees are designed by Matthew Johnson of Seventhfury Studios and features one of a kind designs that range from computer illustrated to hand drawn.

CG: Seventh.Ink grew out of the success of Seventhfury Studios. What prompted the decision to start a site focused solely on t-shirts?

MJ: A few years back, I was doing one-off designs on shirts and selling them as a hobby. These were all really small runs, 5-10 at a time and such. I really enjoyed designing shirts and the more I started to produce, the more positive feedback I was getting on the designs so I decided it would be fun to start my own brand. Thus, Seventh.Ink emerged as a part of Seventhfury Studios.

CG: What is the best part about running your own clothing brand?

MJ: The best part is the response I get from people. For me, it’s all about getting the shirts out there and knowing that people are enjoying wearing my designs as works of art. When people tell me how much they love their Seventh.Ink shirts it really makes me feel like I’m putting something out into the world that people enjoy and that’s a great feeling.

A Hardcore Seventhfury Fan

I’ve heard many times that my logo is “cool”, “tight”, “awesome”, and “wicked”, but never before would I have thought that it was loved by someone so much that it would make a stellar tattoo. Never before now, that is!

While visiting my wife’s family over Thanksgiving, my father-in-law surprised me with what I thought at first to be a temporary tattoo of my logo. After a quick double take and a touch to ensure that it was real, I couldn’t believe that what I was looking at was a real tattoo of my logo on his leg.

What an honor! Free advertising, right? I’ll have to start up a commission fund for the work I’ll be receiving from this lifelong “adspace” I just gained. Makes me wonder if I should get one..

A Great Weekend For US Olympics, But A Great Loss In The Acting World

This past weekend marked a huge point in history for the world as the 2008 US Olympics opened in Beijing, China. With so many great events taking place over the course of the first few days of the Olympics, there were a few highlights that really stand out.

Olympian Michael Phelps and teammates scored the gold in the men’s 400 relay medley, keeping Phelps’ dream for 8 gold medals at the 2008 Olympics alive and barely beating France in what was called the best 400 relay medley event in swimming history. The war cry that exuded from the US team after the winning time was announced on the scoreboard was out of this world, and the excitement was unmatchable. You can read more here, but if you missed the event you really need to find the video to understand just how close it really was.

Overall, it was an awesome weekend for the Olympic games and I’m really excited to see how Michael Phelps fares in his continued pursuit of history.

In other news, the acting world lost two great actors this weekend: Bernie Mac and Isaac Hayes. I was shocked to find out Saturday morning that Bernie Mac had passed away from pneumonia. Bernie Mac was one of my favorite comedians, and I’ll never forget his great role in Ocean’s 11 and 12.

Isaac Hayes, the former voice of Chef from South Park amongst other things, was found passed out on the ground next to his treadmill in Memphis, Tennessee. The cause of his death is as of yet unknown, and this is another shocking and unexpected death. Both he and Bernie Mac will be missed.

Seventh.Ink Is Now HackerSafe with McAfee Secure

With the new obtainment of HackerSafe by McAfee, I decided to go the route of being super secure with my shirt site, Seventh.Ink. There are a lot of great features available with the new McAfee Secure and I took the opportunity to get my hands a great service.

Beginning next week, McAfee Secure should be fully integrated with Google and other major search engines, showing off sites that utilize their services of providing the safest net possible. This is a great asset, and I’m very excited to offer this security on Seventh.Ink.

Blackberry in the House

Just got a new business phone the other day.. a shiny new BlackBerry Pearl 8130 and boy am I happy. I won’t even post a photo of the last phone I was using, most of you wouldn’t even believe it. For shame.

Needless to say, upgrading from my last phone to a PDA with such a huge list of capabilities is a bit daunting, but so far so good. Luckily for me there are quite a bit of sites out there that offer tips and tricks as well as general set up information when it comes to working with a BlackBerry. The main thing I needed was email access wherever I went, and I definitely got more than I bargained for.

After perusing sites for a few days I finally figured out how to get my email working. For some reason, the menu system just isn’t that obvious so I was having some trouble. I think Sprint had some good info on it’s page titled “How do I set up email for my BlackBerry 8130 or 8830 device?”, but for some reason it still wasn’t clicking for me. I was trying to set up an account with an SMTP server system, so why don’t they just come out and tell you how to do that? I basically had to create an account Username on the phone and THEN go in and enter my email information for my SMTP email. All I had to enter was my email address and password and viola! Instant access.. as far as I can tell.

So what other goodies did I stumble upon during my BlackBerry crusades? My personal favorite is a blog on WordPress called My BlackBerry Pearl 8130 in which a man named Kelly Carter, who is an Adjunct Instructor at Mercer University in Macon, GA, writes about the trials and discoveries he endures with his new BlackBerry. Pretty interesting stuff, and a good resource for some really cool tips and tricks. It was here that I found another site that will soon become more visited by yours truly, RogersMJ.com.

RogersMJ posted a theme for the BlackBerry that I find absolutely awesome: bPhone, a simulation of the beautiful iPhone that runs on your BlackBerry. You may be asking yourself why I didn’t just get an iPhone if I wanted one so bad. There are a few answers, mostly relating to cost and the necessary service provider switch. To be honest, I’ve been with Sprint for the past 7 years without an issue while many around me complain about the service provided to them by TMobile, Verizon Wireless and AT&T. Plus, Sprint is rockin’ their design side at this moment. Or, I could just have a comfort zone that I don’t want to leave.. but that doesn’t sound like me.
